Legends of Belariath

Axios

It all began on a hot midsummer's night during Alhren's Faire when the acoyltes were let out of the towers to enjoy the festivities below the mountain in the sleepy village of Fenden. Whilst all the acoyltes were away there was an exchange of coin from a farmer to the head Sage and a young boy who was left there. This young boy was Alexander Jyorn. The farmer departed the spires and left Alexander there.

This young Alexander would lose his name and last name and the Order would give him a new name and a new family. . .this young man would then be known as Axios from then on. Sent then to the dormintories with the other boys. . .this is where his life truly began.

Axios doesn't really remember much before the Order. His childhood is either left forgotten or he actively forgets those formative years on the farm with a family too big and food in too short supply. The Atheros Order seemed a better fate then starving to death and supplied the Sages with a new copyist and worker. What the Order didn't know was the real reason why he'd been left there. . .not for coin, not for lack of love. . but because they feared the boy. The feared his blue eyes and what they saw.

Axios was born with the innate gift of omen-sight. Or rather he sees the intricate details of the world and through that can interpret omens. . .whether it's cloud patterns, the pattern of wood, water, or just how things fit together. His parents were in awe (and frightened) of this ability. It sat him apart from the rest and when he'd predicted some terrible luck to befall a fellow villager they decided to send him away somewhere he and they would be safe.

Axios formative years with the Order were dedicated to learning. He learned how to read, write, do mathematics and learned how to take care of a library. As he grew older his dedication to books and reading them grew. His special ability kept him apart from the other kids. An Elder Sage noticed this gift (via spread rumors) and then saw that Axios was isolated from the other kids via giving him library duty all the time. It didn't perplex Axios that much. He rather enjoyed the company of books or people.

Axios enjoyed schoolwork but disliked some of the menial work of the Order. It meant a lot of sweeping, and cleaning and yet more cleaning. . .and this made him a little complacent and a little lazy. He learned how to bend the Order's rules and system and get people to do some of his work in exchange for favors. Without a family to fall back on . . .he was going to be there for life. The Order trains some children to be scribes and they leave to go back to their original families. Axios wasn't like these children. The Order has a rule for kids who stay too long into adulthood. They are expelled into the world with some money, and a few personal items and told to bring back a book, or some knowledge that the Order may not have. In essence. . .a forced sabbatical.

As the years wore on and Axios got nearer and nearer to this cut off age they began to teach him the basics of magic and a few magical spells to aid him in protecting himself. He learned some other spells from the Acoyltes for basic essential necessities. (The clean spell, for example! Which is a good thing to know considering their strict hygiene policies!) So after this training he was given his ceremonial knife and then told to pack up for the ceremony of knowledge. (A prestigious affair for acolytes.) But, Axios knew what it meant. No more three square a day, no more roof over one's head, and no more small stipend of money to use in the village shops below. It meant going out to a distant land and. . .learning about it. So with money in pocket, a journal, his clothes, and a dagger. . .out into the world he went. And its from there his real story begins in the lands of Belariath.
