Legends of Belariath

Della

Della is the offspring of an adulteress King and his mistress. Days after her birth, the mistress died from pregnancy complications and the Queen ordered her to be killed. The messenger who took her out to be killed in the forest could not do such an evil thing to an innocent child born into a bad situation. He travelled miles away and found a childless pair of humans who wanted a child badly. He told them of her story and that if they did not tell a soul, they could have her. They promised, knowing they would not have a child otherwise. The red headed babe was beautiful and they loved her. They named her Della, a little joke since it means nobility.

They raised her as their own to be a loving, kind girl. She was far from wealthy but it was a life rich with love. She was raised to be a healer, though she rarely studied, not a fan of books or learning, she enjoyed getting to know people much more. It was on her eighteenth birthday that her mother told her who she really was. She loved her parents but she felt she must seek out her father to hear it from him, to learn about her birth mother. She took with her what little coin they could provide and the clothes on her back. She was terrified. She wondered what he would say…She had dreams of being welcomed with open arms and then suddenly, she was a princess and loved and cherished throughout the land.

She went off to find her place of birth and upon finding it was told that the king had been killed in battle many years ago. She went to the king who was ruling, his son and her half-brother, told him the story her mother had told her. He knew exactly who she was, he had been there as his father died and told of the child he had borne from his mistress. He knew she would have a chance at his kingdom as she was born before him. He called her a liar and whore, seeking riches she had no claim to. He had her banished from the land and chased out of the kingdom. He had sent a few of his soldiers to kill her but she was thankful to find a person to hide her. He never told her but it was the messenger. He knew she was the babe he had been given all those years ago, knew that her words were true and felt the urge to save her once more. Once the soldiers thought her gone, he smuggled her out of the city and then let her go off on her own. She was heartbroken, knowing her birth father and mother to be dead and now she would have to return to her real mother and father to tell them how awful her half-brother was. She just could not face them like that. She had begun to wander through the lands without worry of where she went or what happened to her. She somehow ended up in Belariath and slowly made a place for herself in the land.
