Legends of Belariath

Deyhan

Deyhan sat in the chair ramrod straight. He'd not have been called into IG HQ for no reason and pulled from his normal patrols without good reason. But the missive seemed to have the ring of dicipline in it. Why would that be?

The door opened to the small room and in walked an inquisitor. A parchment in his hand, the man took a seat opposite the knight. " Ser Deyhan." he said simply.

" Yes."

" You came from a humble back ground?" the inquisitor asked.

" Yes." the blond half elf replied. " A small farming comunity. So small it had no real name. Just the Vale. In the small home I grew up in, there was three generations living under one roof."

" I see." said the questioneer. " So you had no formal inductination into the order of the knighthood?"

Deyhan shook his head. " No, it was a knight passing by, that gained my attention at a young age. He stayed in the Vale about the same time evvery year. traveling from tournament to tournament." Deyhan sighed. " It was after several years of seeing the respect her garnered that I posed the question of how to become a knight to him. I explained that my family had too many mouths to feed, how I wished to be something other than a farmer." The guardsman lowered his gaze. " It was after negotiating with my family that it was decided for me to become his page, learn how to become a knight from the ground up."

The inquisitor made a few notations on the parchment. " And how long did you train under this..." here the man squinted at the name. " Ser Geffith....A hedge knight if I'm not mistaken."

Again Deyhan nodded. " Seven years, before I was made Squire." he replied.

" Duties preformed?"

Deyhan gave a slight laugh. " I tended to his armor and weapons. I tended to his horse and my own he lent me. Cooked, though not often, cleaned his cloths, shined his boots...." Deyhan sighed. " The list goes on. But eventually I learned how to ride, how to fight from horseback, the colors and sigils of the various houses. Again the list in extensive."

The questioneer lifted one piece of parchment to revel another. " Before your appointment to the Imperial guard, there is no record of you earning your sword, shield and spurs. Never being dubbed a knight." he made mention. " When did this happen."

Deyhan swallowed, swallowed hard through parched throat. " It...Did not happen." He confessed, his honor not allowing him to lie about not having been knighted by a Lord or fellow knight. " We were attacked by a band of highwaymen before reaching Nanthion for a dinner." Deyhan's eyes lowered to the table, remembering that ambush. " I tried to defend our horses and pack mule while Ser Geffith defended us, but there were too many. I was struck from behind an lost conciousness. "His eyes lifted again to face his accuser. " When I awoke, I was bound, robbed, Ser geffith was dead."

" And yet you claim here in this role call to be a knight for the Imperial guard." He said with a hint of accusation. " You lied to gain employment through false use of a titled knight." the inquisitor said with raised voice, standing up to intimidate the young half elf.

" No." Deyhan replied simply.

" Care to explaine yourself?"

" There's nothing to explain." the faux knight replied as he tugged free a silver chain with pendant of dragon-handled sword. Tiny chips of amber made the eyes. " I dared to dream of a way to conduct myself with honor and vigilance." he said. " I let my actions speak for themselves."

" And so they will." the inquisitor said as he gathered his paper's and left without another word, leaving deyhan wondering if this would be the end of his self appointed knighthood or not.
