Legends of Belariath

Liana

Born the second daughter and third child of an average family on an average farm in an average town, few would have expected Liana to grow into anything more than mediocrity. But unlike her siblings who were, for the most part, content to remain the farmers they had ever been, Liana yearned from her earliest days for something -more- than average.

Though to look at her now, one would never expect it, the young Liana was quite the tomboy, more inclined to the rough and tumble wrestling of the village boys than the gentler play of her sisters and their friends. As a child, she would spend her nights dreaming of adventure and heroism, often fueled by the tales of the traveling minstrels, and as she grew into a young woman, common were the days she would wander from her father's field and mother's hearth to watch the militia training, the huntsmen stalking into the forest.

Though they fought her desires at first, eventually her parents realized that the willful Liana would never be content with their quiet life, and rather than have her wander off more often than not from her chores, they agreed to allow her several days a week to learn the trade she longed for, the warrior's path, from the local blacksmith, a retired soldier happy to pass on his knowledge.

Liana proved to be a quick and able learner, and it wasn't long before she set out to make a name for herself, leaving the only home she'd ever known behind with naught but the clothes on her back and a dagger given her by her mentor - hardly the accoutrements of an adventuring warrior, but the young woman is nothing if not sure of herself, and has no doubt that her resources, like her fame, will quickly swell.
