Legends of Belariath

Raesa

Her life began from a rape. It was that simple. Her mother never talked about it much, and like all children who didn’t know their fathers, Raesa wondered about hers. On the rare occasion that her mother would speak of the incident, she never seemed to bear any ill will toward the wayward man.

For the most part, Raesa grew up as a normal Elven child would. She knew little of her barbarian heritage, but that didn’t seem to matter to her. She learned of the various races through her mother, and by going into the city with her mother. The village was about a half-day’s ride from the city, and there her mother used to do some trading. Her mother did bead work that she sold or traded in the city for various things, including food and clothing. Of course, this art form was taught to Raesa, along with some Elven calligraphy and a couple other forms of art.

It was on one of these trips that her life would be forever changed. Her mother had given her some coin to treat herself to something nice, a reward for all the help she’d given. She did her shopping, taking her time at the vendors of interest, and had even purchased a few things. She had a set time to meet her mother for the return trip home, and at that time, she made her way toward the meeting place. Upon arriving there, she was confronted with a scuffle. For a moment, she stood in confusion, not really sure what was happening before she discovered that it was her mother, in the process of being robbed and murdered.

Distraught, she returned home to seek justice. She had seen the man who committed the crime, and fully expected the elders to pursue punishment. They, however, didn’t see things her way as it happened outside of their home, and outside of their laws. With that verdict blazing in her mind, she went into a fitful rage and set fire to the forest village. Fortunately, none were killed in that blaze, though the entire village had been burnt to the ground. The Elders found her guilty of the crime, and banished her for doing such a terrible and forbidden act. As she left the village, they mourned for the trees lost in the blaze and set about rebuilding the village.

She wandered the lands for many months, intent upon finding her mother’s killer. She learned to survive, and even some bounty hunting skills in the process. Though she’s never had any formal training, she has managed to catch a few bounties on her own. Through her travels, she has come to Nanthalion and has made this place her home.
