Legends of Belariath

Raeycor

Raeycor was born into the Crimson Cliff tribe of the densely forested steppes north of Lake Eld. The pack to which he belonged, was among one of five wolven packs that had slaughtered a clan of barbarians, the Leaping Trout clan, about five centuries before his birth, and settled upon the sheer cliffs overlooking the lake which had been left unoccupied following the betrayal by the barbarians which wiped out the previously occupying wolven tribe.

The Crimson Cliff tribe had taken its name from the site of that bloody massacre (known as Blood Cliff), the five packs deciding to join together following the events to separate from their current tribe to form their own. The five packs carved out a modest area for themselves north of the lake reaching far into the Elder Woods to the Northern Shield Wall and including a small watering hole and fishing area at the base of the cliffs taken from the vanquished barbarians. The location, as well as the nature of the packs (four of the five being warrior packs) brought them into constant conflict with the barbarians that took up the preferable fishing sites just to the north of Lake Eld, south of their own tribal lands.

The five packs flourished, however, in the time since then and the size of the tribe has grown from a very small five packs to a decently sized twelve. Their hunting grounds to the north keep them well fed and growing, able to sustain a much larger population than the currently do. It is conflict with their neighbors, specifically the other barbarian villages to their south, which keeps the tribe from growing their numbers much quicker.

Today the state of near constant conflict continues to exist and it is into the situation that Raeycor was born. Hardly a day goes by where the tribe does not have at least a small clash with barbarians to the south, other wolven to the east or the numerous other races which border their long stretch of territory. All out war is relatively rare, once every 5-7 years on average and usually ends with little lost or gain other than the lives extinguished in the process. Even so, the intensity of conflict can often rival that of war, depending on what sparks are ignited and by whom.

Given the state of conflict, the hierarchy of the Crimson Cliff tribe should hardly be a surprise.

Alpha: Fenr, 2. Garn, 3. Arha, 4. Leki, 5. Rhe, 6. Skodi, 7. Sira

The tribe having been formed around violent beginnings, and constantly being in conflict, it is no wonder Fenr is the pantheon's alpha and there is nothing so abnormal about the preceding arrangement of importance.

Of much more surprise though is the Pantheon order. With Fenr, Garn & Arha as allies and often supported by Leki, and often only opposed by Rhea & Sira with occasional assistance of Skodi the tribe maintains a very aggressive posture that is often unmitigated by the competition of the lesser god. As such the tribe often deals with its members falling into devotion of Bael, gaining a lust for war and conflict for no other purpose than itself.

It is this path that Raeycor eventually found himself; an adamant follower of Bael. The details of his pursuit of this path are obscure and rarely talked about by him or the others in his pack. For those who spend enough time in his presence though, gain his trust and prove themselves the truth may be revealed.

Being a follower of Bael he most often makes his way as a mercenary and sometimes captain of men at arms. He revels in the destruction of war believing that it is the best means of bringing individual glory and the belief that through that destruction comes renewal of a stronger breed. He is quite intelligent and carries an intensely logical and analytical view of the world. He follows Bael willingly, and not under the false opinion that he is doing the work of Fenr.
