Legends of Belariath

Rekos Ayres

Rekos Ayres was born Rekos d'Karr Orthad, son of a wealthy trader in his homeland of Maharra, far, far to the west of the borders of the Empire. A desert region known for its marketing of spices and ores mined from deep beneath the sands, Rekos was to be the heir of the greatest trade union in the region. From a young age he was raised by a nanny, never saw his mother or his father, and was always pampered; born with the proverbial silver spoon in his mouth. Over time, he grew to resent this life, being secluded from society as he was far too important to his father's business to be allowed to mingle with commoners and the like.

Finally, once he could take no more, Rekos decided to break free of his father's 'tyranny'. In a typical rebellious-teen manner, he ran away from home for a time, joining up with a band of the local Thieves Guild in his city. Things started out easy for the young thief, petty pickpocketing, the occasional breaking-and-entering. When his father discovered what he was doing in his 'free time', he was shut up back within his home once again. This lasted for roughly five years, until he was eighteen years old. Breaking away from that life once more, he vowed to leave his homeland and never look back; he did just that. During one of the city's grand festivals celebrating the Desert Spirit they hailed as a deity, the dark-haired youth escaped from his family's stranglehold.

During this time Rekos honed his belief that petty thievery was just that; petty. He felt that a true 'rogue' should be charismatic, diplomatic and above all, civilized. Seeing himself as a confidence man, he made his way through the cities of his homeland, evading his father's clutches as he struggled to reclaim to his one and only heir through various methods; bribery, bounty hunting, etcetera. It was also during this time that he fell into a very spiritual state of mind. The Desert Spirit, or the Red Wolf, was a closely cherished icon in Maharra, and Rekos adopted the act of meditation to cleanse and clear his mind and body. He picked up various ritualistic meditation methods in his travels, encountering as many beliefs as there were blades of grass under the sun. Two years were spent with a nomadic tribe of feline-people, as well, during which time Rekos improved his sleight of hand, and adopted various eccentricities of the catfolk - growling and purring in particular.

Eventually, the road lead him ever onward til he met travelling woman named Mishanna, who went by the nickname Minx, and the two became fast friends. Years were spent on the road, the Westerner and his vixen of a friend making their dues through hunting and often less... scrupulous. Along their travels they happened to stumble across the expansive realm of the Empire, and they found themselves in Nanthalion, taking up residence at the Lonely Inn.
