Legends of Belariath

Saphfyre

She slowly stretched on her bed of pine needles, breathing deep her first true breath of consciousness. Very slowly her eyes opened to gaze up at the colorful leaves on the trees above her sheltering her. She felt the cool breeze brush over her skin as she looked around the area. She was in a nicely sheltered clearing, the forest surrounding her like a mothers distant embrace.

She stood up her feet feeling the warmth from where her body had just lain. She wasn't afraid. She felt that something was looking out for her. She knew her name was Saphfyre but nothing else. No memories of a time before her waking up though she remembered a voice speaking to her. Unable to tell if it was male or female it was a comforting voice. "Go my child, be a watcher of the world, see what you can learn and experience from the others that share our world…" That is all she had to guide her a vague voice telling her to learn and watch. She headed into the woods her eyes and ear alert to any new sounds. She had no fear. She instinctively knew how to take care of herself. The coolness of the days and night did not bother her in fact it was still sometimes a little warm.

She heard laughter one day and slowly trailed though the woods to another clearing, following the voices. She saw some small forms chasing each other playing a games or something. She stepped out of the woods and at first they did not see her, but then the smallest one practically crashed into her as he was running and looking over his shoulder. He screamed when he saw her and started running away "The Winter Devil is here the Winter Devil is here…" this set the other children off running and screaming in fear. She never got a word out. After that incident she did more watching in the small towns but she remained hidden from their view while she watched.

Then one day she came upon a hooded male on a path. He took her into the local inn where she walked in the open and surprisingly no one screamed or ran from her. And there seemed to be many different races here. She saw none that looked like her but then that didn't surprise her…
