Legends of Belariath

Schylla

Martha was a young woman of 19 years old when she met a very powerful moriel mage. She swore to be his anji, his student and servant, until she was learned enough to make it on her own. The woman had many happy times with her Akri and she grew and blossomed into an extraordinarily powerful seductress. She loved the moriel with all her heart, regardless of whether or not the love was returned. She was so madly in love with the moriel man that she began to use her power as a seductress and his status as a mage to research some very dark magics, and very old magics. When she was grown, she became pregnant during a fling with a human. The girl she begat was named Cheryl.

Her daughter Cheryl grew up and grew beautifully. After long years of pouring over tomes, Martha found out that there was a way for her to stay young and alive as long as her beloved moriel later when she had already reached middle age. The spell itself was dark and malicious, and involved using the essence of a virgin to preserve the purity of youth. She took a very very long time getting the spell exactly right. It was a long ritual after all. Now all she needed was a virgin.

Cheryl had grown into a fine woman, and gave birth to a baby girl named Schylla. Many years passed, and Schylla grew to be a beautiful farmer's daughter. Cheryl and her husband went to sea, without the little girl, and they were lost to the treacherous waves. Schylla was then raised and taught the powers of magic and the ways of the seductress by her grandmother Martha, to whom she gave the affectionate title: Gram.

When the now venerable woman had aged many years, when Schylla was but 2 days from her 18th birthday, Martha recieved a premonition from a soothsayer that told her that her doom was coming in three days. Left with no more time to find a suitable host or body, she had to make a difficult choice. Her mind had turned callous with her long-possessed powers of magic, and she had already gone a little mad from researching such dark arts as to obtain eternal life. So in her darkest hour her eyes fell upon poor young Schylla.

On the day of her 18th birthday, Schylla was put under a spell of sleep to keep her dosile, and Martha began the ritual. It took an entire day to complete the dark act. As she came closer to speaking the last incantation and signing the last symbol the old woman looked upon the girl asleep before her. The callous old mind of the seductress shattered, and she felt pity for the girl. This damaged the spell and the old woman's concentration, and she went into an absolute fit of motherly love for the girl, trying to fight the powers of the spell to save her once she had realized her mistake.

It was too late. The spell, now turned curse, had erased Martha as everyone knew her. Schylla's body lay in silence for a while, and when the woman woke up, Martha blinked her eyes and suddenly realized what had happened! The bunny of fortune had hopped from her chimmeny flue to the bannister and now her yolks belonged in the puddle pot.

Well suffice it to say that the woman was mad. Luckily for the poor girl though, the curse was degenerative, and after 5 long years of perfectly preserved humanity(unbeknownst to Schylla) the curse faded to the pont that Martha and her madness were just a distant echo rather than the mad owner of a delicate human body. Dirty, beaten, lost in the woods, but somehow in possession of 200 Mehrial, Schylla awoke and wandered into town, hoping to find some answers.
