Legends of Belariath

Seran

Born the bastard son of a high elven noble and his chirot slave, Seran came into life in unique, but painful position in his father’s court, a court that had long held a grudge against those with wings. Above a slave, but below all else, Seran was constantly sent trial after trial, his body, mind and spirit pushed to the limits again and again, but never broken. Still, the constant abuses and beatings instilled into his soul, a darkness only amplified as he watched his mother, her wings long broken and in naught but tatters, stare out at the sky, longing to know the touch of the wind on her body once more.

She died never again knowing the joy of flight, her body and spirit broken, then burned in to ash. On the centennial anniversary of that day, when her ashes mixed with his blood, the darkness finally boiled to the surface, and journeyed away from the court for a few days, happening upon a lone glade, and its sole guardian, a will-o-wisp nymph named Rylia. The instant his eyes fell upon her the darkness in his rose up, and his succumbed to the desires burning in his heart, raping the nymph then and there letting the pain, anger, the hatred and betrayal all flow from his body as he used her, finding to his slightly addled mind that the nymph enjoyed it despite herself. Deciding to keep his new prize, he collared the nymph and returned to his father’s court with her as his possession.

However, the nymph found herself at the bottom rung of the courts social ladder, the slave of a bastard son of a slave, causing her to suffer constantly as the butt of jokes and pranks, a number of them actually doing physical harm to her. Things were only compounded for the girl as Seran grew increasingly abusive and agitated, his own life made increasingly difficult by other members of the court. His father had grown increasingly distant from Seran, his mother having been his favorite among his slaves, and the pain slut’s son too much like his mother for comfort.

Somewhere in this time, Seran, on one of his many wanderings away from his father’s court stumbled upon an old and slightly run down shrine deep in the shadows of a forest. That shrine belonged to an ancient, and almost forgotten god named Jogh'Nklar, a god of the night. What happened there in that shrine is privy to Seran and the one who became the god he served, and none other, but, when Seran emerged, he was filled with a greater confidence than before, as well as something else lying deep under the surface. However, this wandering would have its price upon Seran.

Finally, unable to take the abuse any longer, Rylia fled, leaving Seran to fester amid the pain and misery of the court, before finally leaving it in disgust. For a time, he traveled, managing to contain the darkness within himself and managing some semblance of stability. However, some time after first coming upon the inn, the darkness within him rose up and was finally loosed, causing him to become what he is now.
