Mindset:

Layman are those people, be they farmer, gardener, maid, butler or any variety of common worker, who make the day to day life possible throughout much of the empire. A layman is often either one just beginning their life or someone who was content to stay with the simpler tasks, leaving the more dangerous or intensive tasks to those whom are more foolhardy or inclined.

There are two common types of mindsets. Those laymen who are content with their station and are happy being considered by many to be the lower rung of society. Those that are content know that without their hard work, much of life as we know would become much more unpleasant. The second common prevalent mindset is those who feel they are trapped in their station. Often many are born to layman parents and they pick up the work of their family. This mindset is often resentful of those they serve or who are above them and are likely the first to look for a leg up and bigger things. The first however often spend a lifetime in service and are happy to excel at their tasks, improving in them over time.

Concept:

Laymen are the common workers who make up the bulk of everyday life. While not as glamorous as some of the other classes, they are essential to the empires existence. Their service is a boon to many and be they slave or mere hired worker they labor at the useful, non-skilled tasks done day to day.

Advantage:

Inherent Skills
You may chose 3 initial skills from the following list and will need to add them to your skills section of your character sheet on the website in the following manner: Inherent skills: (name of the 3 skills you chose goes here). Here after, each time Layman is taken, you will get to select 1 extra free skill and add it to your inherent list. Please note: The 3 additional skills only apply at character creation, if you dual class and add Layman at level 5 or 10, etc, you get 1 extra skill initially then fall in sync with gaining 1 each time the class is taken.

Unranked: Agriculture, Begging, Bluffing, Boating, Calligraphy, Candle making, Cheesemaking, City Survival, Climb, Cobbling, Dancing, Dye making, Exotic Dancing, Fire-building, Fishing, Flower Arranging, Foraging, Grooming, Groundskeeping, Haggling, Horseback riding, Landscape gardening, Looting, Mining, Playing Instruments, Rope Use, Rowing, Sailing, Singing, Soapmaking, Sound Imitation, Streetwise, Stonemasonary, Swimming, Tea Ceremony, Wagonbuilding, Weapon Maintenance, Weather Sense, Weaving, Whistling/Humming, Wilderness Survival, Winter Survival

Jack of All Trades
The layman looks for a niche to fill, wherever that may take them. From the bowels of deepest, darkest dungeons to the loftiest towers of highest magical learning, laymen are a necessary component to most any craft. Whatever limitations they may face in life, there is no such thing as a layman of no use, only laymen in between uses. Any establishment can hire on a Layman including the Imperial Guard and Noble Houses for all manner of laborious work from stable hands to maids and kitchen helpers.

Disadvantage:

T-T-Tough Guy, Huh..?
Description: Laymen are not combatants. Their station in life reflects that distinctly, as there's nothing in the world of Belariath to prevent a person of any caste from taking up the sword besides their own aversion toward or lack of talent for violence. As such, laymen are dreadful at picking fights, and are more likely to get themselves hurt in the effort than anything else.

Mechanics: Any fight which the layman tries to instigate incurs a 10% reduction in their !init roll. This does not take effect if the fight is instigated by an opponent. 'Instigation' for this purpose occurs when one party makes the IC decision to initiate a physical fight, and does not take verbal exchanges into account, which is to say that being rude, disrespectful or offensive does not qualify as instigation. Who actually rolls !init first in the OOC room is irrelevant so long as the instigator is established IC.

Master of One
Laymen are adept at adapting to new skills and can readily pick them up. Their devotion is lacking however, and their interest is prone to wander. A layman can achieve master status in no more than one ranked skill.
