Legends of Belariath

Classes

Mage

Mages are primarily focused on the gathering of magical knowledge and power for whatever purpose they decide to apply their arcane arts. They tend to value mental will and prowess above the more martial of arts. The being that takes upon themselves the power of all elemental, spiritual and will within a magical world has learned to balance themselves, reach out and touch more then the eye can see and then use it with a calculating need that is left to the mage alone to decide. Be it destructive or world changing. They are neither crazy nor are they sane and they are never to be underestimated because they have a frail body for the mind and consciousness lives well beyond what a body can endure.

Mindset:

As the ultimate seekers of arcane knowledge and wisdom, mages travel very diverse paths in this pursuit, yet it is that thirst for knowledge that unites them. Typically more at home in cities, they are often found tucked away in libraries studying the tomes they hold dear or places that will allow them the opportunity to train and experiment in their arcane arts. It is not to say that they won't travel to far off places, seeking to uncover some hidden truth in crypts and ruins. For a mage, there are numerous means of gaining the knowledge they crave rather than a single path to follow.

Their values vary from soul to soul, Religion not at all unheard of among Mages, but absolute commitment to any cause is something rarely received from them, even when its sworn. This isn't to say all Mages are untrustworthy and prone to betrayal, but if the oath of yesterday impedes the search for knowledge, tomorrow's choices will never be set in stone.

Concept:

Advantage:

Sense Arcana
This ability will cause the mage to get a slight prickling sensation on his skin, or perhaps the hairs on his neck rise, when he is in the presence of a spell or strong magical item or effect. While not as exact as detect magic, a mage will have some sense of the fact the effect is present.

Magical Mastery
The mage knows how to fight with magic and defend against it. The mage knows just when to move, to defend on the go. The mages magical skill and understanding of said magic allows him to instinctivly know when to dodge and why.

Mechanics: The mage gets an extra defense vs Magical roll, a class dedicated to the study of magics and all that is put within spell casting to the knowledge thereof.

Mage x 1 +1 magical defense
Mage x3 +2 magical defense
Mage x5 +3 magical defense
Mage x7 +5 Magical defense

Disadvantage:

Hunger for Knowledge
Much like the bard, the mage can be easily led to danger and astray by being too focused on their goals, but with the mage, it is purely the studies of the arcane and the knowledge of those arts that drives them to such peril.

Magical Fixation
The mage's devotion to magic can often become fervent and narrow minded, distracting him from all other forms of training or skills. While others train for combat, the mage trains his mind to such a degree that his defenses against the more material may suffer. This disadvantage is considered in-play for as long as Magical Mastery is used.

Mechanics: This disadvantage gives the mage a negative modifier to any physical attacks made against them in combat:.

Mage x 1 -1 physical defense
Mage x3 -2 physical defense
Mage x5 -3 physical defense
Mage x7 -5 physical defense
