Inventors Alley Contest

Postby lyllamarie on Sat Jun 29, 2013 6:12 am

The Tower of Umbara will be going under construction in the next few months. They are looking to add a new and secret wing, designed especially for the underhanded and murder-in-mind at heart. As these plans go underway, a new kind of contest is coming up from the vents for everyone to participate in.

What we are looking for are 'unique' shopitems, both of a magical and mundane quality that can be sold to those looking to expand their repertoire in the thieving and assassin world. You're submission, if considered viable, will earn you some mehrial to spend. So make sure you've put some thought into it!

Keep in mind, since these aren't special items persay, or spells, the mechanics should be easy to understand and quick to use. Most shop items won't require a level or class, but if you think it needs to be there, be sure to have it included. These items will also for the most part be considered 'disposable' once used, unless otherwise stated.

Examples:

Smoke Bombs

Available to All Classes
Level Requirement - None
Suggested Price
Suggested Amount sold by (by the pair, a dozen to a box, sold by the singles..etc)

Description: These small black balls are filled with a noxious liquid, with a rather delicate exterior littered in divots that is meant to break apart when thrown against a solid object. Once it hits, the mixture inside will mix and press up through the divots, releasing a hazy thick fog that waters the eyes and obscures the assassins escape. These come sold by the pair.

Mechanics: The item must be thrown at a solid object, be it wall or ground. The user rolls their STR, and upon rolling over half their strength stat successfully, the balls will release the smoke. The user is then given a roll of !r 1d3 rounds to make their escape, while their opponent chokes and gags. The opponent is stunned, so they cannot attack, but can defend, and should the assassin come within range and try to attack their opponent, the effect wears off.

Indeed, Umbara will see some much needed improvements to promote some more exciting play in the world other than just merely being a dark tower with a spiffy library. It's been rather quiet on my end.. school and lack of epiphanies to be creative with.. but now something big will be coming. Something that's long been in the works. We need some clever, sneaky ideas for what an assassin or a thief would use that would not normally be found anywhere. This special wing will become a Black Market of sorts for the thieves and cutthroats alike to fence their hard stolen goods. As we progress with this, it will undoubtedly be fine tuned to fit need and desire.

Strand of Deliverance

Available to All Classes
Level Requirement - None
Suggested Price: 10 MHL
Suggested Amount sold by: The foot

Description: For the Assassin at heart, this special length of Spider Silk can be used in many ways but one that works well for the administration of liquid poisons and makes for a fast getaway. (could be enchanted to make it go stiff or use it as is)

Mechanics: The Assassin would find their perch over the victim and let the silk hang down in such a position that it would allow them to let the poison drip down the length of it and into the mouth of the intended one.

(The name and such can be fiddled with.)

Night's redemption

Available to All Classes
Level Requirement - None
Suggested Price: 100 MHL
Suggested Amount sold by: individually

A spherical glass flask created by Alchemists and enchanted by mages. It is a single use item. The user taking the mixture and pouring a bit of it onto the ground. The acidic mixture known to be corrosive, and will eat away at anything it rests upon. The pool left will fully dissipate in an hour or two after witch Night's redemption is no longer useful. When the container is thrown down to the ground, a plume of acidic smoke will rise up and swallow the user, teleporting them to where they'd left the puddle.

Mechanics:
Distance of teleportation is limited to 50' and used typically as a fast get away if something should go wrong in an assinination attempt or for a quick and planned getaway for instance teleporting outside the house and behind a bush. The item has to be prepaired icly by making a post and taking a round ahead of time to pour it. If not used in the first 3 rounds of diced fighting, then the puddle of acid left behind has evaporated leaving the item used and inert. This item takes one round to use in combat and goes off at the end of that round giving anyone else involved in combat a chance to hit before going off. Stunned characters will still be teleported so long as they were able to move enough to break the flask and trigger the teleport. They'd just be left stunned at the point of arrival.

I have a few ideas, though one was inspired by another post I saw (I think it was Vladimir's idea):
Idea 1:
Second Skin fluid
Available to All Classes
Level Requirement - None
Suggested Price: 10 mhl
Suggested Amount sold by: individually

Developed by a sorceress who enjoyed the look of being encased in form-fitting leathers and silks, but did not like the restriction of movement that came with it, this alchemical fluid has an oily appearance in the bottle, and is applied directly to a garment made of a non-metallic material. The fluid has but one purpose: imparting elasticity to the garment it is applied to. This has the effect of making the article of clothing slightly smaller, but stretchy and more able to flex with the movements of the user. Each vial seems to have enough of this fluid for exactly one garment (no matter the size). Clothing can be bought with the fluid previously applied at the additional cost of the vial. This fluid cannot be used offensively against armor of any sort.

Idea 2:
Oil of Odor Suppression
Available to All Classes
Level Requirement - None
Suggested Price: 5 mhl/dose
Suggested Amount sold by: individually, vials of 5 doses, or 10 doses

The name says it all. This oil is intended to remove any and all scents from a person, making them difficult (at best) to track by scent.

Idea 3:
Battle Paint
Available to All Classes
Level Requirement - None
Suggested Price: 100 mhl/dose
Suggested Amount sold by: individual doses

This paint comes in many colors, though all are slightly metallic in nature, and was first used by barbarian warriors outside the Empire to draw sacred designs on their flesh before battle. Each tribe claims their recipe to be divinely inspired and sacred, and each tribe believes it only to work with their sacred designs. Though they vary wildly, each recipe has a few commonalities which the alchemists of Umbara have distilled, purified, and replicated. Whatever the source or technique however, when applied to bare skin, this paint lasts for a day and acts to ward away physical harm from the user. The paint cannot be washed off with any mundane means, as it is intended to be able to endure the hard work and sweat of battle.

Mechanics:
For each dose of Battle Paint the wearer expends, the paint provides a +1 phydef bonus to a single location, to a maximum of +3 phydef on the body, and +1 phydef on any other location. This occupies the slot for armor to which it is applied, and as such can only stack with armor from other slots provided they are not similarly occupied by paint. A Clean spell will remove the pain from the wearer's skin, but mundane methods will not. The paint does not interfere with spell casting and can be enchanted with one enchantment prior to application following the normal restrictions for tattoos.

Angelbeamer ((dont ask me why I picked the name for this thing as Angelbeamer cause it just popped into my head for some reason))

Available to all

level req 1

Suggested price 50mhl

amount sold by: individually

A spring loaded device that can be loaded up with custom daggers that have to be brought seperately and the daggers can be retried if you make a roll on a d6 and make a roll between 4-6. The device will have a release button that when pressed releases the spring coil and dagger at the same time and causes the dagger to come flying out. The reload is slow as you have to drop the dagger in and push it against something till you hear the click of it being loaded. When loading the dagger falls on the spring and you push down till you the rectangle like holders for the dagger click causing a prong to drop down and hold the spring at the base of the dagger. Only daggers which are more like blades sold by Umbara can be used, Anything else that is tried to load into the device will cause it to break. The device cant be enchanted itself but the daggers can be enchanted ((but I wouldnt cause we all know how testy des can be with rolls some times :P )) Also the device can be hidden on the characters wrist. Ether on top or below and covered up by a shirt or something. The button to launch the dagger will be located at the bottom on the device so having it on top of your wrist would better since you could hold it with your other hand and press the button with it

Idea 1:
Oil of Spilling
Available to All Classes
Level Requirement - None
Suggested Price: 5 mhl/dose
Suggested Amount sold by: individually, vials of 5 doses, or 10 doses

A deceptively simple looking vial of oil for those assassins that prefer to have their kill be thought of as an accident. The oil is enchanted to have no effect upon anyone but their intended target. It will cause the target to slip upon stepping on it.
Example of effective use: Placed on the upper steps of a long staircase, the trap would stay primed until the victim sets foot on it, then take a tumble down the stairs.

Idea 2:
Oil of Controled Spilling
Available to All Classes
Level Requirement - None
Suggested Price: 10 mhl/dose
Suggested Amount sold by: individually, vials of 5 doses, or 10 doses

A more elaborate looking vial of oil for those assassins that prefer to have their kill be thought of as an amusing accidents. The oil is enchanted to have no effect upon anyone but their intended target. It will cause the target to slip upon stepping on it, but the magical properties of the oil allow the assassin to predetermine the course of the fall. The target can attempt to resist the planned course.
Example of effective use: Placed near an open window on the second floor of the inn, once the target steps upon it they lose their footing and in a shocking display of 'bad luck' stumble toward and through the window.

Mechanic:
Roll Assassin Int vs Target Agi: If the assassin win's the fall takes place largely as planned. If the Target wins they will be able to control their fall.
