I remember it like it was yesterday. My archaeology class had been invited to Scotland by a while known archaeologist by the name of Dr. Tim Greta. He was an old colleague of our teacher and he invited us to his dig site to help study some strange writing he found. He found the writing in ancient cave system near Dundee.
He had heard rumors that the caves had been used by ancient Druids. When he got to the caves he found the writing but it wasn’t Ogham. When he saw it he became very confused. Thus we headed overseas for some onsite experience.
When we landed it was late evening and we were met by Dr. Greta himself. He then took us to one of the local hotels for the night. The next morning we were meet by one of the doctor’s aides. He had came to take us to the caves, which would take some time to get to. Along the way he pointed out various places of interest and of historical presidents.
It took us awhile to get to the caves and when we got there we were taken to Dr. Greta’s tent. The good doctor greeted us and gave us our assignments. He also warned us not to wonder to deep into the caves.
“Dr. Greta why shouldn’t we go deeper into the caves?” asked a guy named Steve Hel. A six foot tall jock that was as dumb as a rock and as ugly as troll. “I mean shouldn’t we explore deeper into them to see if we can find more of that writing or the maybe the source?”
“The reason Mr.….” began Dr. Greta.
“Hel. Steve Hel.”
“Well the reason Mr. Hel is that we haven’t got lights up in all the tunnels and chambers,” replied the doctor. “So it’s unsafe to go any deeper until we get all the lights up.”
We all agreed that was a really good and simple reason not to go deeper into the caves. We all knew that Steve would find away to go deeper into the caves anyway. After getting our assignments we broke into groups and headed for our assigned areas unaware of the impending danger.
My group was consisted of my girlfriend Carla Hems, her twin brother Carl Hems, his girlfriend Amy Nix and our friend Alex Mackenzie. We had finished up one of our sections and headed for the next one. We had barely started the new section when an announcement came over the radio that said “Attention everyone there is….”
The last part of the announcement was cut off by a loud explosion that knocked us all out. When I came too I didn’t know what had happened. The first thing I noticed was that the lights were out but for some reason I could still see and what I saw made me think I was the only one left.
“Is anyone there?” I yelled.
“You don’t have to shout dude,” came a voice not too far away.
I knew that voice and asked “Carl?”
“Yeah it’s me Rick,” said Carl.
I looked toward the voice and was shocked for where Carl had once been standing there was now a six foot grey wolf.
“Carl is that really you?” I asked.
“Don’t be stupid dude,” said the grey wolf in Carl’s voice. “Of course it’s me.”
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and hearing. The grey wolf looked over at me and blinked.
“Rick?” he asked pointing. His eyes suddenly went wide when he saw his hand. He looked at the rest of him and then at me horrified.
“Rick if that really is you,” he said. “What the fuck happened to us?”
“Yeah it’s me,” I replied as I look at my own hands and my eyes almost pop out of my head. I couldn’t believe it my hands were covered in tan fur with large black spots. “I wish I knew what the hell happened to us.”
“Shit. What the hell happened?” came another voice.
“That voice,” I said.
“Alex?” called Carl.
“Carl? Rick?” he called back.
“Yeah it’s us,” I said.
“Alex where are you?” called Carl.
“Over here,” he said and we heard the sound of movement not to far off.
