The Haunting

The crisp feel of the scroll in her hand

It was delivered everyday

After they were read

They were hidden away

Who could say words could be her mainstay

Haunting of vultures and crows

Sat upon her window

Their dark bodies in the sun glowed

Precise pecking against the window

She whispered to go away

Wanting to see her lover’s face that day

The vulture left with a great expanse of wings

The crow stared in the window

She kept receiving his letters

Even after being told he was dead you see

It came to be one day the crow stared at her

His body transformed to her lovers

When she held her hand out to him

A dark wing expanded out of her left side

Black as the midnight sky

The window softened like gel

The crow expanded in height

She stared at the face of her lover

He swept her up in his arms and took flight

Suddenly she sat in a pile of scrolls

Awakened from her dream

The haunting of his voice

For the scrolls spoke to her in his tone

To this day they remain

Every time she reads one

Her lover’s face is found

She grew old alone with her scrolls

Knowing that to her very last day

One would be brought from the crows

And laid upon her windowpane
