Magi development: Class Advantage vs Class Disadvantage

Postby mozenwrathe on Fri Sep 06, 2013 4:06 am

Okay, I know this is new, so please bear with me.

Defensive Aura
The great Goddess Morpheous is a being of pure magic and her children inherit her familiarity with the ebbs and flows of the energy about them. That, combined with years of training and practice, give the magi an almost instinctual reaction to specific magics utilized against them. Their aura flares up, disrupting offensive Arcana and Magi spells and aids in countering or deflecting them. This translates to a permanent defensive warding effect for the magi.
Magi X1 +5% to all magical defense rolls against Arcane and Magus sphere spells
Magi X3 +10% to all magical defense rolls against Arcane and Magus sphere spells
Magi X5 +15% to all magical defense rolls against Arcane and Magus sphere spells
Magi X7 +20% to all magical defense rolls against Arcane and Magus sphere spells

Simple question: why is this effecting (or is it affecting? I never get that right.) solely the Arcane and Magus spheres? Why is this not all dealing with all magical spheres? Considering most "damage" spells are outside of these two spheres, this is not quite the advantage to pair up against the disadvantage posted. That is the following:

Blind Faith
The ruby temple of the magi has made many efforts to try and train the Magi to not rely just upon their magics in a conflict, but their attempts haven't had much of an effect. Most magi place ironclad trust in their shields and magical defenses to protect them from harm, more prone to attempting to endure rather than dodge blows aimed at them. It's no wonder that due to this nature of their people that the Magi prefer ranged combat above all else.
Magi X1 -5% to all close physical defense rolls
Magi X3 -10% to all close physical defense rolls
Magi X5 -15% to all close Physical defense rolls
Magi X7 -20% to all close Physical defense rolls

There's no qualifier so to speak for the kind of close physical attack this applies to. So my proposal is simple, really. If one of two things were done, I believe I would be pretty much fine with it.

1) Magi actually had access to the Arcane sphere, which at the last time I checked they did not. This would explain why they were on the lookout for Arcane sphere magic.

2) Have this protective aura operate against all magical attacks that are distance based. And yes, solely magical distance attacks.

Aside from that aspect of "nitpicking," the Advantages and Disadvantages currently up make sense for the Magi as a class.

"Considering most "damage" spells are outside of these two spheres..."

The advantage says defense rolls against spells. Not direct damage spells. All spells.

Magi once upon a time could have access to ANY sphere that wasn't necro or seductress. That is gone now. They get a boon versus Arcane and of course their own sphere. Arcane is one of the most common of sphere's and thus as it isn't specialized they have the advantage of being good against a good portion of magical attacks. They are a people used to dealing with magic and the more common of magic is that of the Arcane sphere which leads to number 2...

They aren't that great against defending from those who know what they're doing in a close quarters fight.
