Dying....dying...

The poison took grip and her task complete, the mermaid let the current sweep her to where it wished, whether back to the arms of her captors or onwards to new...she no longer cared, for she knew death would come soon and it would be a blessed release. She had done her best to save the one thing she most cared about and her life was forfeit...only one miracle could be asked of the gods this day.

The mermaid's body bent like a branch bowing to the wind as the sea took of its own, bending the long blue scaled tailed sea creature to double, fins and limbs flowing limply and golden tresses sworling protectively about her ailing form. The pulse of life that remained was weak as the poison took the beauty in its deadly hold, the dart that delivered it long since fallen to the ocean's floor.

But Carain was not finished with her blessing and lent the seas a gentle guiding current...
... and put song to the winds that moved it
.... and teased the sea bird that rode it
..... and crooned to the dolphin that played within and without it

..asking for her lover Giran to find their child, protect her and bring her to the afterlife and to peace. She deserved that much for her sacrifice.

But the time of the war was now upon the oceans, when the gods did battle for reign and brought the seas to turmoil and the wind's message was intercepted by her former lover Akakios who did thwart her out of spite and old jealousy.

The body washed to a river mouth shore to dry without preparation.
No colorful weed decorated her form, there was no garland, there was no blessing.
There were no kin to either bring her to the sea foam or to draw her to Giran's oyster shell.

And Somewhere In The Past, This Is All Happening Right Now....

There was something to be said about abandoned riverside camps. A lot of the times, the places could be still serviceable to anyone enterprising enough to take a chance and stay in them. There was a mildly forested area not that far away, and enough dead wood to make fires for days. The man who had found this particular camp had considered himself relatively fortunate. Not as if that fortune would hold. It never seemed to in his case. Considering himself cursed, he had long left the closest city weeks before, stumbling along this holdout of forgotten civility. And it was here he had planned to stay until the weather got colder again. Then, of course, he found her. And everything around him changed completely.

He had never seen a merfolk before in their true form. And it had been a while since he had heard the legends about them. Not really one made of strength, picking up the female form was probably most difficult thing he had done in recent days. And that included moving one log from well inland to where he was now. Dead weight, and slippery at that, but as he saw some breathing, he figured he could afford the chance. If he had left her out in the shallows, either the tide would have eventually taken her away or something else would have. Freshwater crabs being one of the more likely candidates, though there were larger and more ominous predators to be found if one waited around long enough. As there had been no vultures there or similar scavengers, the man figured the female form had to have been proverbial "fresh meat." Not thta he was a cannibal himself, but maybe the merfolk's discovery would grant him some good fortune.

"Thank you, Morpheous and Leki, for this gift. To you both, I give praise and blessing." Not that he himself was wolven or Magi, but he had found those were two of the four deities he always thought himself best associated with. There was something to be said about that, but the human never really bothered to consider all of the ramifications. That would take too much thought away from his primary focus at the moment: survival. The few weapons he had were more than enough, but now he needed to set a slightly larger fire. One that would keep both him and his new "guest" warm. Laying an old shirt over the merfolk woman, he set about creating his campfire slowly and with a dire focus. This was not going to be the day he died.

Next up was acquiring a meal for the evening. Sure, he had caught nothing with his lines for days, but he believed this would be the one day luck would smile upon him. And smile it did, after he had set up the fires, did he manage to catch no less than five more carnivorous fish. The kind no river would miss for long as there was always more of them. Spitting them on skewers, he set them to roast high over the flames, hoping the scent of the fish would awaken the merfolk. And just as a precaution... he had made sure to keep his weapons by his side. Next thing you knew, the female decided she wanted to see how human heads rolled...

Warnings and Danger

Thrice now the young mermaid had received warnings of varying kind yet had felt no threat upon stepping to an island, receiving offerance of aid, teaching and furtherance of the knowledge of histories and magicks of their kind....being offered the comforts of the island home by the river and nearby ocean. Was she to spurn this aid and kinship? The naive young mer found it difficult to judge where true danger lay.

In her limited experience of the land world thus far, danger lay in a number of places....yet she still sought knowledge to those places, it was just a matter of being careful. With her limited knowledge from her kith of the seas, she had been taught that not all cousins were of the same faith and even if of the same faith, not all kin were to be trusted.

Was it more dangerous to trust to a cousin who had history of luring innocent into collar or more dangerous to prod finger to the wing of a firehurling dream of a dragon? Was it more dangerous to be attracted to the soft fur of the vulpine or to the deep growl and rumble of the heavyweight male's voice or to be caught by the glint and glare of an older creature's spectacles as they peered down nose at her through the glass?

Whatever the cost, whatever the danger however, Marena knew she must press on in her search for the songmaster, her treasures and a solution to her plight.

The Art of Healing in Mer

As she sat to the desk in the Umbara library, one finger traced the lines of scribed text and she pretended to read from that line, moving her lips. It was kind thought, this future gift but she had not the heart to tell him she could not read the mer written therein. She was easier since having words with this cousin and trust was restored, so earnest his words that she felt came from the heart. And this gift, or future gift because it would take some days to complete, this scribed book on the healing arts in merfolk, would have been perfect...but for the fact she had not been raised by mer nor learned to read or write in her racial language. It was doubtful she could learn to read in just a few days but would value the gift nevertheless and add it to her treasures.

The main puzzle that passed her mind however, other than the fact of not being able to read the book, was where to store it? Her pockets and packs about her person were bulging and a book was too large to be traveling with. She had offer of home to two islands, places of rest to the town and one to a great castle. Spoiled for choice, Marena could not decide where such a book should be kept for safekeeping and access. A quandary indeed.

The Flaws, The Merits, The Terror and the Triumph

The dark lord was one of the last to be shown what was under her hood. All this time and he had allowed her to retain the bulky cloth over her hair as he applied himself to her body, working on how to extract what he wanted from her young form (which luckily happened to be enjoyable to the mermaid). She had lied yes, but only by omission of the showing. Caught in his arms he demanded no sadness, no fear, no fury and that she should trust in others who earned it and there was a darker tone to his voice and an odd glint to his eye stating that she was not in trouble, per se...only that she was going to be punished. His hand between her thighs prevented her transforming to complete the revealing and the urge to fuse limbs was so acute that she struggled to leave his strong embrace, her pleas refused at first.

Wriggling to escape, the maid of the sea fumbled in pushing the little silver ring to his finger, only managing to get it shoved on to his smallest finger up to the first knuckle. She was only released to submerge and take to tail once she had confessed what she was vocally and there was scant time for reflection when she was followed and pinned to the pool's wall and persuaded with more force to divulge her tale for his understanding.

Freed from her urges, betailed and beguiled, the mermaid, as before with another Lord and friends, gave her gift of breath beneath the waters but this time to the dark lord of the smiths. She coiled her heavy scaled tail and arm to hold him beneath until any struggles and panic for fear of drowning subsided and allowed her words to flow. He promised his aid as he teased her merform but in so promising she had to make one herself, a bargain of sorts. To gain his assistance she would have to accept all of him; the flaws, the merits, the terror and the triumph.

Marena, made her promise, accepting the risk.

Cultivating the Green Grape and a Friendship

A friend of a friend is a friend. Marena was pleased to hear the tidings from the island's apprentice, a girl who was to soon become the lady of the Il Mutah Har. Her friendship with the island's owner was special and her heart lifted to know he had found a special love. She cared for him very much and knew she had welcome and haven at the island and now she felt that same welcome from its future mistress. Like the green grape she was attempting to cultivate around the weed beds to the isle, this friendship warranted careful nurturing as much as the rare grape.

The Little Black Dress and Bonnet

Her employer, the furred Lord....but one moment, wait, she had two furred Lord employers, but one more seen than the other...the short vulpine furred Lord, she corrected, was generous and thoughtful, Marena mused as she admired the feel of the dress and crispness of the new garments he had gifted to her. In the Keep, they parted ways after he had layed the black outfit to her hands and Marena made her way to one of the dormitories to try it on. It was a very smart change from the old drab robe that still lay crumpled to the bathing chamber. Marena slipped the pretty black dress over her head and smoothed down the long skirts that reached to the floor. When she moved to turn around to admire the skirts, she still stumbled, but the high slits up both thighs prevented the stumble being on account of tripping on too tight a material, merely from her inability to walk properly. And the pretty bonnet, with an extra sized cap area behind the front that would take all of her matted mass of golden tangles, was perfect to hide her shame. The bonnet was also in black with little white frills around the edges to her face. To complete the look the bonnet had a set of black ribbons that tied beneath her chin and the whole headpiece fitted snug to her face preventing the usual golden wisps of tangles to escape like the hood did when the wind blew or she nodded her head with enthusiasm. The young mermaid did not want to take either off but both were better to be saved for special occasions...perhaps.

Kay-os-fyre

The mermaid was mistaken for a bathing attendant, yanked up by her matted hair when she tried to hide in one private pool when another entered. She had not thought to lock the door and was commanded to deal with her customer. Her evading in fact was likely to cause more ire than if she attempted to act like an attendant. Upset at having her shameful hair tugged, Marena sought to hide behind his back to sponge the male's body. But the Lord of Heat with the translucent and barely-there wings would have none of it, having set his mind to one task and commanded her again to do his bidding. Marena found herself now before him in the pool as the lord desired to attempt to ease her mass of tangles with oils, soaps and fingers and refused to hear her pleas to withdraw beneath the waters to listen to her tale or hear her truth.

The truth was, those tangles would never be freed by simple means cursed as she was and without her treasures and this Lord began to find this out. The golden mass of tangles at first eased under his touch, this lock and that would lengthen, straighten to what would seem normal curl and separate, its wavy length reaching to the waters, only for it to retangle and bundle once more as soon as he moved to another group of tendril and lock. A dark magical shimmer of some curse would fall over the locks he loosened and cleaned once washed and tended, coiling the spun gold tresses back to their dirty matted previous state. Her legs had coalesced to tail when the urge had been too much while in the pool waters but again she was refused to submerge and speak freely but her sad tale was wrought out of her by his command in her broken common.

It was a kindness he tried to do, Marena realised this when she spoke of the curse and the treasures and this Lord's commanding tones seemed to ease to tenderer coaxing when help of knowledge and resources were offered to her; that of priestesses with knowledge and a library full of information of curses and aid to finding the songmaster and her most precious.

The heat that emanated from him was dangerous but if it could be tempered and contained in her presence with a calming touch...no boiling bathing pools, no ire, no anger...and she might survive this drak sen's aid. Between the lords and the teachers, the mermaid might have secured the best help possible to figure her plight.

The Lord called her 'Siren' and told her he would make her sing but she was only the daughter of one. Between the kisses, which began like the softest breath needed to fuel a fire, and between the touches, that tested the threshold of what was painful and pleasurable, he bid her call him by a name, so she named him...the Lord of Kay-os-Fyre.

Keeper of the Lighthouse

She emerged from the cold sea waters and peered around the underground cave. She made no attempt to hide her sounds in anyway and the splashing of her heavy tail as she hoisted herself out of the waters and on to the stony side echoed softly around the cavern. She hummed her song, that eery sound that announced her arrival and her song of his name now echoed through the tunnels as well.

"Waaaadeeeeywade...Foooormidaaaaable"

He greeted her naked self with a warm embrace and welcome, returning her nose nudge and kiss with his own and the desire to show her something. The mermaid grinned and followed willingly for his 'somethings' were usually exciting and new to the maid of the sea as the vulpine developed and designed his island home. Through different lava tunnel he supported her climb. It was steeper than the others and led to a small plateau and set of stairs with a trap door through which they passed. After taking breather and short rest to simple table and chair, he showed her the jar of oil and slowly led her up the vast number of stairs, some five flights of broad and shallow circular stairwell that led to the top of the white tower. The all of it was cut out of the marble stone, near all white and topped with glass to its pinnacle. The vulpine explained the apparatus and showed her how to keep the lamp lit then asked her if she would take on this task to keep the pirates from his rocky shores. Every three days the lamp needed tending so that the light would always shine.

In days past, Marena had helped him alongside their mutual friend Callie, to store his own treasures secretly. These were his golden offerings for his Lady now hidden deep beneath the oceans wave and secretly guised to a sea cavern and blocked off with island rock. She now helped him with his lighthouse and agreed to become its keeper so that he need not fear its lack of light when his business called him to Thallis. She only had mild reservation, that the swim to and fro from island, forest and town would be taxing with her other tasks, work and her own searchings. But she could not refuse this special friend, his island felt more like a home than the other offerings of bed and he promised her her own room. This was plentiful payment in kind but she would have done it anyway.

"Who better to,light the way, than the mermaid with the golden locks and the silver heart?" He stroked her pretty face softly as they both admired the view from the glass window of the 1800 foot tower "..strange the people faith and divinity bring to you."

Marena was now the Keeper of the Il Mutah Har Lighthouse.

The Search - A Beginning

Marena thought over the various to whom she had made her revealings, told her tale and received offer of aid and thought.

The Lord Matwyn, vulpine and Master of the Verkot House, was more about trying to trace her treasures by some form of scrying and had bade her describe them to him and asked about their enchantments as he had some knowledge of enchanting. She gave to him as best she was able in common a description of the pieces, which was limited at best, and told of the blessing upon them that balanced the evil of the cursings. He proposed that she look to the library and find similar in a drawing to help.

Zully, the cousin, had offered to help also in anyway he could to find her treasures and refind her honor so that she might show her face fully again. With his connections to the sorcerors of the Umbara and knowledge held within the library, much might be possible. He offered her home so that he might see her safe and watch out for her, that and act as her teacher of sorts.

Wade, the vulpine air mage and master of the Il Mutah Har and self named 'Formidable' was all about seeking the songmaster. Her tale had lit a fire under the man who until this point had been the epitome of calm and serenity to his island home. "Tell me who to kill. We will get whats yours back.. how can I help? We can find him. We WILL, find him; and I will take back and return to you what was taken from you."

Callie, the 'softer' vulpine water mage, healer, expert chef and a friend from the start, though it had been many weeks since she had shared with the female, she knew that Callie would help in whatever way was needed, even if it was just to comfort her with embrace of her soft blue furred body and touch.

Coralia, the white scaled sister was the first with whom she had shared and trusted and had also offered her the comforts of sisterhood and freedom to be who she was without shame.

'Lord Smith', the dark lord of the Smiths, so named by her, was a man who kept mostly hidden from the town of late had given her his foresight on her plight "Might be easier to replace them than retrace their whereabouts. However, with the right scrying and the right individuals, locating them again may be possible. Especially if those items are tied to you by blood and breath, deed and desire. There are... things in this world that I can always find because of whom and what I am. A blacksmith's spirit is not the only thing I possess, Marena."

The 'Lord of Kay-os-Fyre' commanded her to give tale of the curse the why and the how of it, stating that he knew of priestess who could work with curses and had a library full of information on them. He offered help to lift it, if only to see the smile return to her eyes."So we have a man to find and return your treasures to you. I shall certainly offer my assistance in this.... A bard you say.. and we can help you remake if we cannot find him, though I suspect it is easier for him to find than ask a god or goddess to be benevolent."

Had she seen Marena's little list she would no doubt have sniffed in derision at her absence from it. But then again, when did Rebecca -not- sniff in derision at, well, everything really?

Still, that was besides the point. She'd already had some sport in not only taking a pile of cash from the newcomer but, and once she had the money of course, then giving the poor mermaid a little scare at how "frightfully disappointed" Matwyn would be over the fact Marena had spent his money not on clothes but on a magic ring. Still, dear Rebecca had offered to help. An invite to her house where she had some clothes Marena could have. A gals little secret between the two of them.

Was this really Rebecca being nice? Sadly no.

If she'd had some sport before she fully intended to have more with the newcomer if she did decide to visit her. A pretty young thing like that? If Rebecca couldn't get her starkers in her bedroom within an hour of her turning up she'd consider herself to be losing her touch with the ladies. And if there was one thing Rebecca -did- pride herself on, it -was- her touch with the ladies. Well, several of them in fact. Especially the one she liked to call the "corkscrew". That was the one wh...actually that doesn't matter. What does are her plans for Marena if she does show. For Rebecca did indeed intend to let the mermaid have certain items of clothing - well, a gal did like to keep her word did she not?

Of course, as to what the items were.......*wiggles eyebrows*

Something To Not Quite Think About, Usually.

Prydain was a lot of things, but a stark coward was not one of them. Sure, he had known to make way for potential threats he figured that he could not defeat or destroy, but that was called prudence by some. What Marena had asked him to do, to "help her" with something she had no particulars for? He was normally one to shun such requests, especially when he knew full well he was not getting paid for it. There had been a few minor league bounties in his past, nothing he would readily speak about or admit to in his case. Something along the lines of "help me find these missing things?" That normally ended up taking him to places that were far from his personal lines of interest.

Was he going to welch out of this offer he had made? Not a chance, but once again he had wished he had learned how to use one of those great axes he was always making. He knew that people asking for such things never fathomed exactly how much blood might be shed before getting to their goals - their own or others. He himself had a few things he had yet to find that he really had a desperate desire for, but he had long ago rationalized he would never acquire them. This mermaid, Marena, had not reached such a jaded place in her life, and he was loathe to nudge her further in that direction. So he was going to try to work together with whomever it is she got to aid her. Even if they were a necromancer. He made no promises to himself about how any such alliances would last after Marena's goal was found - one way or another.

Sighing while sitting on top of the Might Makes Right late of night, he wondered about those he had met and their own goals, their own dreams, their own hopes. There had been a few he had tried to aid others in a more subtle or indirect fashion. Once again, he allowed his thoughts to meander about if he had actually been a positive influence to any of them. Darker waters and midnight snows aside, he had to question whether or not anything had actually moved things in a direction he could appreciate. Shaking his head slowly, he looked down at the township below, mostly unseen by the masses.

"Well, Little Marena, you got yourself a smith. May my presence not bring an anchor through your ribcage."

The White Tower

He stood atop the white tower, 1800 feet above the sea. The light was dark now, the oil well empty. Five tails flicked side to side, the man draped in white as dazzling as the marble around him watched the sea, wondering.
Had there been a mishap? A thousand leagues below, where he could not reach. Reaching over now he bends the lamp lense up, the sun arcs the light into the water. Tying the arm in a fixed position he locked the handle forward.
Now, he filled the oil well. Then, he lit the lamp, the bright light hits the water, and though it is limited to the depth it can reach, Wade prays she will see it. Brows furrow. This long of a silence was uncharacteristic, but the sea and all those who dwell there are a mystery to him.
Each day, he fills the well, and makes sure the arm is fixed on that same spot. And he prays. He prays to his Goddess his message is seen.

The First Fetish

The maid of the sea returned with her excuses. Western oceans were sick with the dead and dying and, without message due to the urgency of the ocean's call and plight, she had journeyed to lend her aid to her kith and friends.

From one Lord, she expected punishment for her absence without notice and sat quietly to his side and accepted his pawing when he hosted another Lord's visitation. The punishment would come later and she would learn for the next time.

From another dark lord, she expected further temptations to be shown and meeted out and wondered at her ability to follow to those shadey depths.

From a special friend, she expected forgiveness, understanding and embrace but had not quite anticipated the emotions that swirled like tidal pool and the mermaid realised her fault in not leaving notice possibly better than from any punishment that the first Lord might manage. Those emotions overwhelmed and brought them closer; mentally and physically to a more intimate joining of bodies and a better 'knowing' of the heart's needs.

And it was during this 'mating' that Marena learned something of herself; that she was particularly attracted to the older male...the 'father figure', that the older male wearing spectacles excited her, that even in the throes of sensual passion she would take the time from her body's thrashing to keep those spectacles upon the mate's nose...come what may and against all odds..... where sweat threatened to topple the glasses from their nasal perch...in order to fully enjoy the full flavour of joys that the male could elicit from her body.

Image

This...was Marena's discovery of a first fetish...though she was still oblivious to that word's meaning in the common tongue.

The Punishment

There were firsts for everything, first experiences to the land living and this was but one. She neither thought of it truly as punishment, nor reward, merely what must be and tried to relax not fully knowing what to expect. Her pert rounded rear was exposed and uplifted, her barefeet and toes touching to the other side of the Lord's lap and her palms reached to flatten to the floor. She turned her head to watch him and his expressions, ever the voyeur.

There were to be twenty; one for each day of her absence without notice with a little knocked off in leniency for neither Lord nor employee could immediately remember the reason this punishment was to be meted out. The Lord, likely because this was this was regular occurrence in the Keep that he could not keep all record of the spankings he doled out and to whom. The mermaid, because in her mind, the absence had been justified and the urgency of her kith's needs to the western oceans warranted a swift departure.

Her little silky black dress lay pooled upon the floor but Marena kept her pretty black bonnet with its white frills on. She did not mind the nakedness but was grateful to the Lord that he let her keep her bonnet on. The solar where he bid her bend over to his lap did not have door and she was more concerned that her 'shame' was exposed than worried about her pretty rump raised and on view to any other of the castle who might wander by.

By the fourth, her buttock cheeks had began to smart from his hand paddling and her fingers had begun to tingle with healing magics, her lips readying a hum of a cantrip to enable the magic to course through her touch but her hand was nudged away with the Lord's warning that in so cheating her punishment by a heal, he would have to start over again. The magicks died on her fingertips and lips as he now took a paddling stick to the swell of her breasts, making them jostle and redden to match the color of her raised arse.

It was beginning now to hurt the young girl of the seas, the discomfort she felt after the fiftheenth smack bid her to ask if there was way to reduce the punishment's total. But the offer that was forthcoming was not welcomed by the mer as she felt the Lord's finger probe to where the sun rarely shone. Instead, Marena accepted the remaining five, for where others, according to the vulpine Lord, might consider the alternative a lighter sentence or pleasure even, to the untrained and still relatively innocent maiden it was a punishment to be avoided. The five remaining were rained down upon tit and cheek with the promise of a gentle kissing afterwards. Marena acquiesed.

The pool's warm water soothed the stinging flesh of her body when later the Lord threw her to pool and she submerged and transformed with a trembling relief that this even 'light' punishment was over. Marena knew she would not wish to incur harsher wraths. Her emotions were hidden beneath the waters and the unshed tears merged with those of the pool and soon dissipated. Her limbs fused to tail and her black bonnet was loosened and drawn off her head to allow the golden mass of matting that was her shameful cursed hair to sworl as free as the tangles enabled. Marena became playful and made her response for the tossing to the pool by throwing the sodden cloth bonnet at the Lord. This action might have provoked another's wrath, one less temperate but the Lord merely wondered if she was angry for these punishments. Marena rose head from the waters, her pretty smile now visible and beckoned the male, luring with the inherited siren's smile and offering of her silver ring of Tongues to join her beneath so that she might make her full apology in her flowing but old fashioned mer tongue.

Character Biography - How the Mermaid Came to Belariath (Level 5 Promotion Content)

This particular maid of the sea was born out of a union of a Sarenheit and an Angivos. Guin'viir was captured during the period of the Three Day War following one All Hallow's Eve. The rave and raid by the Sarenheit's took place upon the oceans below the sky realm of Oceana in the Empire's western regions. It was said that on this particular year of war for supremacy of the Mer gods, the battle and storm's were so intense that even the magi's sky realm felt the hefty shift and rift between sea and sky. It was rumoured even that the Merfolk gods called upon the magi's own Morpheous to take side but no one knows if this was true. On the fourth day, Akakios and his followers were finally thrown back to the churning seas defeated by the Angivos. But the losses of Giran and Carain in this year were heavy.

Guin'viir was amongst the many who were bound and dragged as prisoner to the coral caverns of the Sarenheit. Her beauty and appeal was such that after the torture and debauchery during the warring days, she was retained as slave by one of the leading clans. Her Angivos clan, never lost hope that one day, one Hallow's Eve, Guin'viir would be rescued and returned to their embrace. A year passed, Guin'viir gave birth to a daughter never knowing which of the dominants she served had sired her child but she cherished the baby she named Marena, striving to protect her from the Sarenheit's influence.

Such was the popularity of Guin'viir's service amongst the males to the clan that it caused jealous bitchery amongst the 'gossip' of their Sarenheit females who called upon a sea-sorceress to curse her child to render the babe's golden haired beauty impaired. They did not dare to directly curse Guin'viir herself or face the dominants' wrath. Opportunity came for escape after one more season turning just prior to the next Three Day War - Guin'viir was left unguarded and swam clear of the Sarnheit's territory, though the escape had not been without peril. Exhausted and weakened, pincered by poisonness dart from trap she had unleashed, Guin'viir hid the babe within a giant oystershell, swaddled in rose pink seaweed. Knowing she was dying, Guin'viir laid her own treasures of comb and glass within the shell along side her sleeping babe and sang her eery song and tale to a school of selkie and dolphin asking them to seek out her Angivos kin and clan for rescue.

Carain, goddess of the merfolk, heard the song of the mother's love and saw the symbolism of the babe's protective oystershell and rose seaweed swaddling and chose to intervene. The Angivos were too far distant and the Sarnheit were now alerted with the activation of the poison traps. She coaxed the oyster to open its shell and deliver all the treasures within to her care.

Sensing the sea-sorceress' curse, Carain blessed the mother's treasured gifts to her baby to lessen the curse upon Marena so that, through use of these treasures, her beauty might be restored. A bargain was made that the goddess would make gift of the oyster's pearl to the Selkie and dolphin in payment for care of the child if they would whisk away the babe from harm, both groups agreed but only if they could raise her as their own until of age.

Marena would spend seasons with the Selkie and seasons with the dolphin as she grew, seeing and knowing little of the merfolk. She thought of herself as part selkie, part dolphin yet knew she was different. There were similarities between herself and the Selkie maids but unlike them she was unable to shed her skin or scales in quite the same way. She was introduced to her mother's gifts when she came of age and was told the tale of her being. And it was then she saw her real self within the precious glass and with the comb, able to make a single sweep of her hand with it and the ugly matt and tangle turned into luxurious golden tresses that swept in long swathes, waves and curls down to her feet.

It was not long after this, whilst sunbathing to rock and planning journey to find her merfolk kin, that the innocent Marena was caught by the voice of a songmaster.

It was another's siren song that persuaded Marena to leave the coastal waters of her kith and kin and swim the flowing rivers from the West, finally taking to the land when the rivers became streams and made for the town of Nanthalion.

She sought his song, the fulfillment of a promise, inspired by the music that still wove in her mind and heart. The small talent she had she used on the journey; a knowledge of the healing properties of basic flora and fauna to the water banks combined with her delicate touch and fullness of heart, Marena paid for her food, a cutting tool and simple robes to hide in until finally she reached the town's edges.

From the depths she called home,
the scaled-she ascended her realm.
She saw blood, bones and skin;
fell in love, forgetting he is without fins.
He loved her not and of air he'll stay.
She whispered in an almost mournful way

"I'll make the way you drown beautiful"

"If you're after an interesting tale I've one for you sots" the man bounced the buxom tavern wench upon his knee as he addressed his drinking companions. Each one had been boasting and bragging of this adventure or that when the man decided he would bring his latest to the table and likely earn a jaw drop, the wench for the night if not the week and at least a few more rounds on the house as the tavern owner was also in earshot. He would bet a hundred mehrial on the outcome of their full attention and generosity once they had heard his tale. And he did not even have to make this one up.

"You've all heard tale of the merfolk who lure sailors to their doom....the pretty ones sit sunbathing to the rocks with their tits plump and prominent and their tails wet and wiggly, pampering themselves until a ship do pass by their sights"the males about the bench grunted in acknowledgement and a few heads nodded. "Sirens they call them and many a ship have gone a ground and crushed by the rocks, good men drawn in by their beauty and their singing...good men drowned." A few 'Ayes' were mumbled, more ale was poured and nearby table patrons scraped stool to turn and listen to the man's voice and story, their attention caught by the 'tit' word but also because the man was a natural teller of tales with a charismatic voice that garnered attention.

"I met such a one with hair like spun gold, breasts ripe and ready for the plucking" the tavern wench yelped as the man's hand groped and squeezed her own "..and it was 'I' who got the better of her" he took a chug of ale from his mug, noting slyly that all eyes and ears were now turned upon him and listening, for though there were stories a plenty about the folk of the seas, it was rare to hear of these elusive creatures by a soul who had met one and yet lived.

"A lone beauty she was...a young and fair maid, fresh from the depths and testing her wiles and wares I declare...and it was I who sang to her and landed her to my boat. For two day and night, I sang and lulled her with poem making headway for land and the green-eyed siren listened, enraptured" the man smirked, his gaze roaming over his awed audience and paused his tale just enough to have them urging him onward "I needed no fish net and her treasures were mine for the taking by the time we made shore. I took what I wanted and stole her heart with promises I was never going to fulfill..and now I'll be a wealthy man" he laughed and bounced the tavern girl to his knee again, a hand stealing under her skirts for a fondle.

"Did you fuck 'er then?" one seasoned patron asked with a toothy grin to be met by a sly smirk from the rogue before he replied. "What would I want with a cold pussyless fish when I can now have my fill of warm wenches?" the whole tavern roared with laughter, and the evening passed in drink and bawdy tale but none so fantastical...or real...as the one told by the songmaster.
