IRC clients such as mIRC have a wide range of commands that can help you configure the program to perform complex tasks automatically. Of course, most people never use them, either sticking to the simple things they need, or preferring to use a script or shell written by someone else to do the more difficult stuff for them. So these commands listed here do not attempt to be comprehensive. They just give you enough to reach TLI and start playing there.
/server irc.sorcery.net If you connect to the wrong IRC network this will put you on the right one.
/nick [Fred] Changes your nickname to whatever you specify, ie Fred. Don't include the [ ] in any of these commands. If the nickname you choose is already registered to someone else you won't be able to use it.
/nickserv register [password] [e-mail address] Registers the nick you are currently using so that no one else can claim it. If you don't log in for weeks it will lapse though.
/nickserv identify [password] Logs you in with IRC services.
/nickserv set kill on Forces you to log in with your password whenever you join IRC. This prevents anyone else from borrowing your nick and pretending to be you.
/join [channel] Takes you into the channel you want to join. IE, /join #Lonely_Inn_OOC takes you into our OOC room where other players are chatting.
/msg Desdaemona !login [password] [nick] This is a TLI specific command that logs you in with the bot using the password and username from our database, not your IRC nick/pass. It enables you to talk in our channels. If you have a problem message anyone with a @ by their nick (except Desdaemona - she only replies to specific commands)
/msg [nick] [text] Sends the text to the named nick in a private message window.
[talk] To talk in the channel, just type what you want to say and press Enter. No special commands
/me [does something] To perform an action instead of speaking prefix it with /me. Example /me sits on a mushroom will send to the channel '[Your nick] sits on a mushroom'.
/part Leaves the current channel without quitting IRC.
/quit Leaves the channel(s) and closes down IRC.
/kick [nick] [reason] Removes the named nick from the channel for the specified reason. You can't use this command but a channel moderator can, and they will if you are impolite and fail to show normal courtesy to other visitors. So be warned and read our rules on appropriate behavior if you feel your ability to act like a normal adult is lacking.
