Legends of Belariath

Dragons

Dragonkind come from a history shrouded in mystery. They are a diverse race of many sizes, ranging from the slightly-larger-than-human to the grandiose toppling-a-mountain breeds. They come in all colors and all shapes. Some dragons are called serpents, their long coils seen writhing around a ship far out to sea. Some dragons dwell only amongst the darkest caverns, or in great vast lava-scapes beneath volcanic mountains. These have no wings and manage to slink around rather subtly for creatures of such size.

More well known to the common traveler or knight is the flying dragon, those of great leathery wingspans who swoop down upon villages, wagons and herds of livestock, eating at their leisure and having little to fear. Dragons like to hoard treasure and gold, magic weapons and artifacts even if it seemingly has no value, as they do not usually involve themselves in commerce. Being an incredibly long lived race, they also carry knowledge of such immensity, they are the subject of many a foolish quest.

Some dragons will breathe fire, some will breathe ice, and others will burn and scald with acid. There is little way to determine this beforehand, as a dragon of any color could have any ability. Thus, for the sake of Belariath and the Lonely Inn, dragonkind are best avoided if possible.
