Legends of Belariath

Fae Religion

Her, Goddess of Chaos and Fear

Her is the chosen goddess of the little folk, the fae. She listens and thrives on the chaos that abounds with her people. Born herself out of the very fabric of chaos, Her stands vigil over the diminutive races in Belariath. Her makes sure that her little ones, pixies, nixies and the fae are well cared for. She aids them in their special brand of magic and is always watching in case she can seize up an opportunity to create havoc on a grand scale.

Standing about 3’7” tall with a long flowing deep red topknot and a sweet innocent face, the irrepressible goddess appears at a whim to people who are amidst turmoil or having to deal with fears whether imagined or real. She wears long (well for her) robes with a ton of pockets which are filled with who knows what. She often gives people trinkets out of them.

Her symbol is a winking eye, which is her way of communicating to her followers. With a wink she appears and disappears, leaving people in interesting predicaments that they have to think their way out of instead of fight.

She lives in a land called “OverThere.” Her twin is Him. And it is Him who is the more evil side of the pair: yes she is good, well chaotic neutral and he is the darker side of chaotic neutral. They constantly use people in their battle of wills. In the land of OverThere the grass is blue, the sky is purple, the mountains are orange and the signs are sentient. Yes she lives in the land of dreams and often brings people OverThere to test their will power, sanity and resolve before they go on to greater deeds.

She is a rarity. Someone that only comes around when it amuses her to cause a little chaos, yet never harm, in the lives of those that are around, Her lives for adventure and literally confusing people until they face their innermost demons. She doesn’t care if she has followers or not, but rather enjoys giving away medallions with Her symbol on them. People who have been blessed by these medallions tend to be a little bit lucky and if they are in need of Her help, she knows and comes to them, sometimes without them asking.

Her could take you for a tea party with dragons that hold the wisdom of the ages or she could send you on a snowball fight with dwarves that hit you with catapults of snow, yet she does not kill at all. That would defeat the purpose of learning; which her primary wish: that for people to learn from their own fears.

She is ageless and her magic is in chaos and dreams and healing. Her’s focus is to make people think, rather than just do. She protects those she likes and is quite secretive, not giving up answers easily.

Religion and Racial Quarrels:

Fairies are very strong in their faith to the Goddess, The Mother who created all the lands. Often you will find them singing and dancing her blessings. This is not to say you will have a bunch of mini flying holy-rollers yipping at you to convert. They hold a sense of wonderment to others beliefs just thinking that the larger races have read the Holy Scrolls wrong. All accept the pixie that is.

Given fae are generally non-violent sorts it is hard to imagine them getting in to a blinding rage about much of anything. Until one makes the mistake of calling them a pixie, a name in the fae-ish language that means the non-believers.
