Legends of Belariath

History of The Cat People

Age of Confusion 6131 – 6330 AC

This age showed to the race that they truly were not at all powerful, with them being routed on several very well planned and structured attacks. The wolven showed themselves to be the masters in combat, even when their somewhat weak attacks did prevail over complete and utter lack of morale in their foes.

6131 A cart slowly trundled into the town with the dead bodies of the warriors. Accompanying them were a group of very tall 8’ warrior wolf like creatures that just grinned at the felines as they backed away in fear. They told them that they had killed the cat people who lay in the cart and gave a warning that if any other thing with ears and a tail came anywhere near their territory again they would be hung. As they turned to leave, several of them scooped up some of the cat-girls and walked off with them. They were powerless to help.

6133 After several visits by the “wolf men” the council decided that they were to stage an attack on them to catch them off guard and hopefully stop them for good. A group of cat-girls were used as bait and the trap was set. Unfortunately for the villagers, the wolven decided not to come as they normally did this time but did not show at all…

6134 The same five wolven came once more and pillaged several more females but this time the cat people fought back, but the sheer strength of the attackers felled many of them. After they had been fought back to the edge of their village they revealed that they hadn’t touched the warriors on the cart and that they would be back with more.

6148 Several of the cat-people warriors began to skirt the surrounding land again as the wolven weren’t seen, but the villagers were still upset their beloved warriors had not even been avenged for their deaths. The villagers were fiercely urging the council to find out what had happened to their brave ones.

6166 The scouts had reported the whereabouts of the “wolf men” and an attack party was sent to destroy them. This attack was again half successful with the wolven being killed despite one of them being willing to give information they all were slain. On the way back from the forest, the party was attacked and killed by yet another race unknown to them. The party were never seen again. One terrified cat-girl fled from the scene and managed to somehow get back to the settlement; unbeknown to her she had been followed all the way…

6169 The village was in a state of alert with the cat-people in a panic after what the small cat-girl had to report, some of which in her panicked state was under-described, so once again the council would be unprepared for what they thought would be an easy foe.

6188 The Attack of Minp Pass. This year an attack on the settlement came from two sides and the kittens were caught out in this ‘pincer’ move. To the north was the attack from giant creatures with horns on their heads, and to the south was a second attack from the wolf men. Suffering many losses, the cat people fled the village and watched from the mountain as their beloved settlement was pillaged and their females raped and taken. It was a sad time indeed. The other cat people settlements around the other side of the mountain and down the valley however were not touched in this attack. This led to some caution and worry why they were not attacked.

6190 The cat people that survived the attack began to rebuild the devastated village, first ensuring their precious archives were protected and safe. They soon discovered that these attacking races cared not for parchments or writings, but a second copy was scribed as a precaution.

6229 The works were placed in a tunnel deep in the mountain so that if the copy ever was destroyed or stolen there would be another set of the tomes of their history.

(Scribes note: This second copy has never been found. The location described by the parchment leads to a sea off the coast to the far north. Whether they are buried underwater remains to be seen.)

6240 A real “army” was to be designed to try and combat against the threat of their towns being destroyed. This was disbanded in the same year after heavy defeats, once it was realised that defensive walls and gates would be the answer. So one was to be constructed, out of soft wooded trees that surrounded them in the nearby forests.

6245 The “wall” was finished in this year, with lots of happy faces and an atmosphere of achievement was about the settlement, and a small festival was held to celebrate the completion of this project.

6246 The “wall” collapsed after a fire ripped through it, some declared sabotage and some declared it was an accident. No one knew. They all watched as it fell much quicker than it was created, and plans for a new wall was to begin.

6250 An Orc horde attacked the wall very near completion, but strangely it held the attack. A band of frenzied cat-girls rushed out to attack them, again strangely forcing them back.

6254 There are rumors that the founder is to blame for the win against the Orc war-bands that keep hounding the walls of the village. Cries for them to be left alone in their prayers seem still to be unheard…

Clerics amongst the kittens said it was fate and their own work that had prevailed over the green-skins, but again that seemed to fall on deaf ears. When finally the Orc bands dispersed the clerics were not ignored anymore.

6327 After the settlements continued attacks, the cat people began to leave in huge groups, spreading in all directions to seek their own fortune and begin life away from the council and its pathetic regime of letting their people get attacked and then doing something about it.

(Scribes note: This is the first recorded time that the timeline incurs that there is unrest in the settlement. Whether or not it was erased on purpose or just was not put down in the records, no one actually knows. But there is a huge gap in years here so we do not understand the historic gap. But the next age they have described has something to do with the problem)

6330 The village is once more attacked with a ferocious attack, once more our beloved cat-girls are taken, we mourn our loss. The council and the elder kittens are in major discussions…
