Legends of Belariath

Drak Sen History

N'llaro oer... N'llaro oer cyial…

Children of the Dreaming, the existence that lays beyond the boundaries of reality, beyond the boundaries that mortal man can lay claim to. As to Light, there is Darkness, much the same, to the Dreams, there are Nightmares, the hideous creations of those who sleep. With the Birth of the world came Dragon kind, the majestic creatures that oft times are symbols of the primal elements and powers that be. These beings sought to learn all that they could of Belariath, and being long lived creatures, thought well in advance in preparation of such things. The Dragons slept long, and from those that slumbered came forth vivid dreams, dreams that gave birth to life!

However, such dreams were not the only things that were crafted during the time of the Dragons Slumber. Those Dragons who lived under the surface of the world, in the dark places where people feared things would eat them, where things would snatch their very souls... they did not dream... They brought forth Nightmares... so horribly crafted, so malicious, that they too were given form. These Dreams and these Nightmares were thus named from the Dragons that birthed them, the Drak Sen.

The Dragon Elders, as they were came to be called by their children, often fell into deep bouts of slumber, which prevented them from watching the world, learning of the mortal races and the races of Gaea that populated the lands, and this is the purpose of the Drak Sen. They are to watch the world, to study what they can for the Elders that they were created from. Though, sometimes there was confusion, the Drak Sen never knew which Elders had taken hand in creating them, so when they offered their dreams to the Dragons, sometimes they would offer the wrong Elder the knowledge they had learned . Something had to be done about this, as the few Nightmare borne Drak Sen were disturbing the sleep of the Dreamers. So, at a Council of the Elders, they decided that they would follow the Cycle of Nature, gifted to the world by Gaea.

The Metallic Scales bound together and offered themselves to the Autumn times, when the world grew somber and lost their colors, giving the natural Brilliance of their scales higher purpose with the life that fled away from Winter’s fast approaching touch. They, because of the natural beauty that their scales had, were the rulers of the Drak Sen, holding the higher positions in any council to themselves. The Earthen Scales bound themselves to the time of Spring, when the world reawakened, giving new life to the lands that they tended to. These Drak Sen watched Gaea’s children closely, practicing mimicry to understand better those of the earth, sky, and waters and gave into the carefree ways of the Nymphs, Fae, and Satyrs. Those of the Jeweled scales, the last of the Dream Borne, took for themselves the Winter Season, so that their scales would shimmer and shine brightest against the eternally white landscape. They are the wanderers, watching the world as a whole for their Elders, perpetually following the winter season across the lands. Those of Nightmares, the Mineral Scaled ones, took the last available Season unto themselves, the Season of Summer. This suited them as much as the other seasons to the other scales, the dry, scorching heat, drought, and so many other things that feed into the Nightmares that strengthen the Elders of the darkness.

With the separation of the scales complete, those Elders who founded the Seasons took their dream borne children in opposite directions, so that the watchers would not interfere with one another and the directive that the Dragons bestowed upon them. The Metallic Scales settled upon the great cities of mortal-kind, the Earthen Scales watched the wilderness and everything they encompassed. The Bejeweled scales wandered the lands, watching everything that they possibly could while the Mineral Scales watched the depths, seeing into the very pits of oblivion.

In secret, the Drak Sen watched the world grow, watched the many peoples expand, make war, and simply live. They were an unknown in a rather large world, something that fed the fantasies, fed the dreams and nightmares, and ultimately, fed the Elders as the Drak Sen gave up their dreams as sacrifice to those who created them. They wouldn't forever stay hidden, as the Elders would command, they were to be patient, watching and waiting for the day where they would emerge to the world, to stir up the dreams and nightmares of mortality to begin anew a cycle that would ease the hungered minds of the Dragons.
